Unix, aka Harper, has thankfully found her way into BDHP and we promise this young girl that it will be better days from here on out. Harper is a 1.5 year old, fawn, female English Mastiff who was surrendered to a shelter because of her shyness and fear of strangers. In her previous home she would just avoid those she didn't know and was uncomfortable with but she would be vocal about it when they forced her to interact..which is completely understandable, she was trying her very best to communicate her discomfort. They also hired a trainer to work with her but unfortunately this trainer used adversive methods (shock collar) and this punishment based method only caused her to to defecate in fear upon the trainers arrival. This is why we only use and promote positive reinforcement training methods because we want to reward these gentle giants with love and food with they do as we ask. Unix is good with dogs of all sizes with proper introductions and lived with a Mastiff and Chihuahua previously and is doing great with the other dogs in her foster home. She also lived with children but she would be more comfortable in a quiet home with adults who understood her and what she needs - love and understanding. Harper is house and crate trained and her foster will be working on basic commands as well as working with this sweet baby to help her understand that the world isn't scary and as she grows in her confidence level we are positive we'll see the puppy that is hidden underneath start to emerge. EVERY big dog deserves a chance!
